Dan Ariely has released the fifth installment of his ongoing “End of Life” series, titled “End of Life: Lesson 5 — What Will the Three Days Be Like?”

In this deeply personal reflection, Ariely writes about his experience as an end-of-life doula and his decision to accompany an individual to Dignitas at the individual’s request.

Rather than focusing only on the final procedure, Ariely turns his attention to the days leading up to it: the conversations, shared experiences, uncertainty, and emotional complexity that arise when two people know that a specific moment is approaching.

The essay explores a fundamental question about how people experience time when they know that their time together is limited.

“Will having the countdown make the moments feel more precious?”

Through this latest installment, Ariely considers whether the awareness of an approaching end can change the meaning of ordinary moments and whether it is possible to put the countdown aside and remain fully present.

Reflecting on the Three Days

In the essay, Ariely describes the process leading up to the planned procedure and anticipates having several days together beforehand.

He considers the significance of those days and the conversations that may take place during them.

The individual he is accompanying wants to use the time to learn new things, think new thoughts, get to know each other better, share experiences, and remain optimistic about life.

For Ariely, this creates an unusual emotional challenge.

Both individuals will be aware of the clock counting down, yet they will also have an opportunity to focus on the present.

Ariely asks whether that awareness will make each moment feel more meaningful or whether it will make it more difficult to remain fully immersed in the experience.

He openly acknowledges that he does not know what those days will feel like.

The Meaning of Being Present

A central theme of Ariely’s latest reflection is the responsibility of being present for another person.

He writes about his determination to support the individual in the way that the individual wants and needs.

At the same time, Ariely recognizes that being present during such an experience will have an emotional impact on him as well.

The essay does not attempt to provide easy answers.

Instead, Ariely explores the uncertainty surrounding the experience and the importance of preparing to respond to another person’s wishes with compassion and presence.

Carrying an Emotional Responsibility

Ariely also discusses the individual’s decision not to have family members travel with him, because they would ultimately have to return home without him.

The individual expressed that it would be less traumatic for Ariely to accompany him.

Ariely acknowledges the emotional weight of accepting that responsibility while recognizing that the experience will affect everyone involved differently.

His reflections extend beyond the practical circumstances to broader questions about grief, responsibility, companionship, and the emotional experience of returning home alone.

What Can We Learn From End-of-Life Conversations?

Although the subject of the series is inherently difficult, Ariely concludes this installment by turning attention back toward life.

He suggests that conversations about the end of life, while sad, can also encourage people to think about the positive things in life.

The experience raises questions about how people spend their time, how they connect with others, what makes moments meaningful, and how awareness of mortality can influence the way life itself is experienced.

A Reflection on Life Through the Lens of Mortality

With “End of Life: Lesson 5,” Dan Ariely continues a candid exploration of one of the most difficult subjects people can encounter.

The latest installment focuses not only on death, but also on time, friendship, presence, responsibility, conversation, and the value of being fully engaged with another person.

By sharing his own uncertainty rather than presenting definitive answers, Ariely invites readers to consider what it means to accompany someone through an extraordinary moment, and how conversations about the end of life can ultimately lead us to reflect more deeply on life itself.
