A Life Dedicated to Storytelling, Education, and Historical Preservation

Based in Moss Vale, New South Wales, Phillip Leighton-Daly has authored 24 published books, covering both fiction and non-fiction, with a particular emphasis on Australian history, regional heritage, and young adult storytelling.

His works reflect a deep commitment to documenting local histories that might otherwise fade from public memory while also exploring universal human values such as honour, courage, equality, and integrity.

Phillip’s writing journey began unexpectedly when a school inspector recognized the quality of his written reports during his teaching career. Encouraged by a friend to document their experiences growing up in the Central Coast region, Phillip eventually published his first book, Recollections of the Central Coast, NSW, in 2004.

That first publication would mark the beginning of a prolific literary career dedicated to preserving meaningful narratives.

Educational Leadership That Inspired a Literary Voice

Before becoming a full-time author, Phillip built a 45-year career in education, serving in multiple roles within the NSW Department of Education.

During this time, he taught students across diverse regions of New South Wales, including:

  • Coastal communities
  • The Tablelands
  • Western Slopes
  • Western Plains

This experience exposed him to a wide range of communities and professions, from fishermen and farmers to doctors, quarry workers, and beekeepers, enriching the authenticity of his storytelling.

His time as a primary school educator and departmental swimming instructor also shaped many of the themes and environments later depicted in his fiction.

Research-Driven Literature Rooted in Authentic Experience

Phillip’s books are widely respected for their depth of research and historical integrity. His methodology includes extensive field research such as:

  • Archival exploration in State Records libraries
  • Interviews with community elders
  • Visits to historical sites and rural locations
  • Environmental observation and photographic documentation

Among his most significant research projects are the Kenmore Psychiatric Hospital historical series, which required hundreds of interviews and extensive archive analysis.

Another notable work, Wednesday’s Child, reflects Phillip’s personal connection to World War II history through the wartime service of both his parents. The book has gained regional recognition and continues to resonate with readers interested in historical narratives.

Literature as a Tool for Education and Social Awareness

Phillip believes literature can play an important role in education, cultural awareness, and ethical reflection.

Through his fiction and non-fiction, he highlights themes such as:

  • Moral responsibility
  • Equality and inclusiveness
  • Community history and identity
  • Human resilience and courage

His writing philosophy emphasizes that storytelling should not only entertain but also encourage reflection and understanding of humanity’s shared experiences.
